LA County approves up to $828 million more

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 on October 28, 2025, to settle about 414 more AB 218 claims for up to $828 million, paid over three fiscal years. With the April 2025 settlement, the two total up to about $4.83 billion.

What changed

The Board approved the settlement of Jane BP1-B Doe v. Doe 1 (County of Los Angeles), Los Angeles Superior Court Case No. 22STCV25961, and about 414 related matters, for up to $828 million. The claims are against the Department of Children and Family Services and the Probation Department. The County had announced the tentative agreement on October 17.

According to County Counsel’s letter to the Board, the money is due in three parts: $400 million by December 1, 2025, up to $400 million within 12 months of that payment, and up to $28 million within 12 months after the second.

What it means

These claims were left out of the April 2025 settlement. The two settlements together total up to about $4.83 billion. That is not everything the County faces: in April 2026 its Chief Executive Officer reported more than 6,000 new AB 218 claims that are not part of either settlement (FY 2026-27 Recommended Budget).
